Hey Dawn

Hey Dawn vs Xero

Xero is where your books live. Dawn is designed for the inbox bills arrive in, and to push what it finds into Xero as drafts you approve.

By Jimmy, founder of Hey Dawn · 3 min read · Updated

Xero is your books. Dawn is for the step before them: finding the bill in the inbox it arrived in, and pushing it into Xero as a draft you approve. If you run Xero, Dawn is not a replacement — the two sit at opposite ends of the same bill.

What Xero does well

  • It is the system of record. If your business keeps books, this is where they are, and your accountant can work in them beside you.
  • It chases your own unpaid invoices for free, off your bank feed — it knows what has actually been paid, which a mailbox cannot.
  • Just Ask Xero, its AI assistant, is included for every subscriber, and it works from what the books already know.

Which one you want

Choose Xero if…

You want Xero either way. Books, a BAS and an accountant who can see your numbers are its job, and Dawn does none of that and is not trying to.

Hey Dawn is for…

If bills go missing between arriving in your inbox and reaching your books, or you do not keep books at all, that is the gap Dawn is for.

Common questions

Does Hey Dawn replace Xero?

No. Xero is your accounting system; Dawn is designed for the inbox that bills arrive in, and to push what it finds into Xero as draft bills you approve. Xero stays the system of record.

Does Xero find bills in my email?

A bill reaches Xero when somebody enters it or forwards it in, so the noticing still happens in your inbox. Xero works from the ledger and the bank feed once the bill is there.

Will Hey Dawn work with Xero?

That is the plan: bills landing in your books as drafts, ready for you to approve. The inbox comes first and the Xero connection follows it, so the honest answer today is not yet. Dawn is in early access: join the list and you will hear when it lands.

Is Hey Dawn an alternative to Xero?

No. They do different jobs: if you are choosing between them you are choosing between keeping books and finding bills, and most businesses eventually want both.
